The best suiting fabrics for wet weather

Whether you live in Melbourne, Singapore, London, or New York, spring brings fickle weather patterns. It can easily go from refreshingly sunny to heavy downpour in minutes, and Melbournians are used to experiencing four seasons in one day. Suiting up can be a challenge when spring rains arrive. Arm yourself with an umbrella and any of these fabrics to keep yourself sharply suited and comfortably dressed, no matter how the weather changes.

A water-repellent wool fabric

High-performance wool fabrics offer a wide variety of qualities. Our Eco-Evolution collection features three different cloths produced in Italy and the UK, one of which is a water-repelling wool fabric that’s designed for the well-travelled. This quality is achieved through the weaving of the fabric rather than a chemical coating, which ensures that it will stay water-repellent throughout its lifespan.

A water-repellent wool suit means you no longer have to worry about being caught in the rain and damaging the porous wool fibres anymore. Mind you, these fabrics are not water-resistant but water-repellent, which means that they can’t handle heavy volumes of water. But splashes of water or even wine can simply be wiped away or brushed off easily, saving you dry-cleaning fees and ensuring your suit remains impeccable even if you’re careless.

This series of Super 130s wool fabrics are available in various micro-check patterns, solid colours like a deep green or navy blue, and glen plaids in varying hues. Durable, reliable, and evergreen, a suit from these fabrics will remain in style decades from today.

Cotton On

Cotton is the most-used material in clothing and has numerous benefits. It has natural stretch, is highly breathable and lightweight, and absorbs colour well, allowing for vivid fabrics to be produced. It’s therefore an ideal fabric for spring suiting; even if the temperature fluctuates, a cotton suit should insulate you from the cold to some extent.

Cotton is a hydrophilic material which means that it easily absorbs any water it comes into contact with. In the rain, this would be a disadvantage, but if you’re dealing with splashes of water or incidental drops, a cotton suit can easily handle such volumes. Not only that, cotton also dries easily without staining, so any wet patches on your cotton suit’s outer shell will quickly dissipate.

Our favourite cottons are our denim-style cotton fabrics. Available in four colours that range from an obsidian blue for OP1943 Babylon Denim to a deep blue with a hint of green in OP1942 Jungle Denim, and two grey-blue fabrics, they are easily adaptable and incredibly comfortable. You can design them in numerous ways for casual or formal suiting – we suggest a relaxed fit for that louche appeal.

Wool, Silk, and Linen Combinations

We’ve written about fabrics with a mix of different yarns and how they can be very useful depending on the qualities of each yarn. In silk, wool, and linen fabrics, with the highest composition being silk, the fabric has some natural water-repelling quality. This is due to silk being a hydrophilic yarn, which means it repels water. That makes our silk, wool, and linen fabrics in our Jacketing Redefined collection excellent options for this spring.

The silk, wool, and linen cloths in the collection come in a wide spectrum of colours and patterns. This is again due to the ability of some yarns to absorb colour well, therefore giving us the opportunity to inject energetic hues that are perfect for spring.

Use our Styling Tool to see just how these wet-weather friendly fabrics will look as separates or a full suit. You can also explore each of these cloths in our lookbooks, shop them directly, or browse your Style Guide to see how else you can wear these fabrics.
